We love all kinds of design here at Print Express, as you might expect because we see a huge amount of it. But great, creative design doesn’t just appear in regular art prints – it takes all kinds of unexpected forms, and today I wanted to talk about one of my secret tiny pleasures – coaster designs. It’s pretty rare to see the humble coaster transformed into something worth writing about, but every so often you come across a really stunning design that makes you want to keep it instead of ruin it by putting a glass on it.
Beautifully designed coasters like the ones showcased below aren’t necessarily functional – in some cases they might be found in wedding stationery, or in a gift bag, or to promote an event, or simply designed by the artist for fun. There’s also the element of depth with coasters – because they are more functional, they tend to be made with a thicker card stock, and so they can suit techniques like letterpress very well. They can even be made with wood and have the design laser etched into it. I’ve included examples of all of these techniques and styles in this post to give you some inspiration into the broad range of designs that can be achieved in such a small and specific medium. I hope you find this collection interesting and, as always, if you know of any other examples of beautifully designed drinks coasters, I’d love to hear about it in the comments at the end of this post.
I hope you’ve found this showcase of coaster designs to be useful, and that it’s given you some inspiration that you can apply to your own projects. If you know of any coasters that deserve a special mention in this post (and especially if you’ve designed them!) then I’d love to hear from you in the comments below.
