Graphic design book review: A return to the book as a work of art

Forget kindle, forget Amazon, forget the iPad even, and luxuriate in the old-school seal of quality delivered by Nobrow™ Press. Established in 2008, this independent publisher focuses on showcasing work by skilled illustrators and graphic designers. With print-runs never really exceeding 5000, the employment of unusual formats and full spot colour, quality really is the bye-word of the Nobrow imprint.

If you need an antidote to the world of mass production, then submerse yourself in one of the latest Nobrow productions. These graphic design books focus on imagery rather than text. They showcase a mix of illustrations that are contemporary and commercial.

Coming soon is Luke Pearson’s ‘Everything We Miss,’ whilst particular favourites of mine are the illustrations of the oddly named ‘Mathew the Horse’ and Nick White; whose ‘People I’ve Never Met & Conversations I’ve Never Had’ is pure genius. If you ever need a lesson in the beauty of simplicity then Jon McNaught’s novella ‘Birchfield Close’ is a must: it captures the peace and security inherent in the mundane and idiosyncratic street in which he grew up.

Graphic design book review

If you’re London bound you can pop into Nobrow’s shop/gallery at 62 Great Eastern Street or check them out online. The latest exhibition to be housed

in their gallery is ‘House of Gold: an exhibition of work by Butter,’ a trio of illustration, printmaking and animation aficionados.

As well as printing sublime books, Nobrow operate a screenprinting studio at their Great Eastern Street location. Here they work with artists to produce beautiful and extremely short-run (max 100), publications and posters. Although I am personally something of a screenprint addict, I can’t believe anyone would fail to be seduced by the beautiful items that emerge from the Nobrow Small Press. If you purchase something from here, you will be buying a real work of art, all individually signed and numbered by the artist. To get an overview of the lushness

of the Nobrow talent you must secure yourself a copy of the ‘Nobrow Magazine’ (shortly to have reached it’s 6th incarnation), which showcases illustration talent from across the globe.
